Social Anxiety Counselling

Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) can cause tremendous anxiety in such normal daily activities as going to school, work, or attending social functions. One can also experience physical symptoms such as a racing heart, avoiding certain situations, and sweating. Whereas some people are just naturally shy, others are more extroverted and outgoing depending on their inherent personality. However regardless of which category you fall into, anyone can experience Social Anxiety Disorder at some point in their lives.

While feeling anxious about meeting new people, starting at a new school, job, or performing in front of others is perfectly normal, there are signs that this is more than just jitters. If you consistently fear new situations or avoid them altogether and has a negative impact on your life, you may be experiencing Social Anxiety Disorder.

There are both psychological and physical symptoms associated with SAD such as:

Physical Symptoms

  • Faster than normal heartbeat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Muscle tension
  • Nausea
  • Confusion
  • Out of body experiences

Psychological Symptoms

  • Fear of engaging in a situation where you may be judged
  • Fear of being humiliated or embarrassed
  • Extreme fear of engaging with strangers
  • Constantly judging or being critical of yourself
  • Fear of offending other people
  • Avoiding event where you might be the centre of attention
  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded

Those with Social Anxiety Disorder will typically avoid social situations where you might need to eat in front of others, using a public washroom, starting a conversation, or even having to return a purchase. This disorder often begins to show symptoms when a person reaches their early teens. Symptoms can easily be dismissed in teens as this is typically a stage when many changes naturally occur in their lives.

If you begin to increasingly avoid normal daily or social activities, it is time to see a licensed, professional counsellor. Whether you are an adult or a teen, I can provide a safe place where we can begin to delve into your fears and anxieties in a non-judgmental space. I would look forward to helping you forge a path to a greater sense of confidence and once again regain the joy in your life.
